Sustainable avocado farming

Avocare is proud to practice organic, sustainable avocado farming.

Our avocados are grown in the high-altitude rainforests of southern Rwanda. On the slopes of mountain farms, the cool, humid climate, year-round sunshine, and rich, black, volcanic soils create the perfect environment for avocados.

Avocados grow in such abundance here that post-harvest loss is common. On many farms, fruit is left to rot on the ground and farmers earn a few cents per fruit.

At Avocare, we turn this loss into gain by processing ripe avocados for oil and other products. Instead of rotting on the ground, farmers sell their avocados to us. The fruit does not need to be processed immediately so we have time to transport it securely to our factory.

We pay our farmers Rwf250 or 25 cents for every kilo of avocados we buy, providing a real living wage. They used to earn about 2 cents per kilo.

Our avocado farmers are now happy to have sustainable businesses with a buyer who appreciates their quality products.

Avocare is a green, zero waste company that follows Fairtrade and sustainable organic farming practices and wastes nothing in our processing. We have even developed a tea made from avocado stones.

Our brand, Green Diamo, represents our “green” business together with the avocado gem – a true diamond of sustainable avocado farming.

Supporting small-scale avocado farmers

Everything we do at Avocare is underpinned by our desire to support small-scale avocado farmers in Rwanda, 60% of whom are women.

When farmers receive the best income for their crops, they have secure financial futures, and can provide for their families and communities. Their avocados attract premium prices, and we reduce harvest losses due to seasonal oversupply.

70% of Rwandans work in agriculture. Avocare’s founder, Niyidukunda Mugeni Euphrosine, grew up on a small-scale avocado farm with her parents who were both farmers. It’s not surprising then that avocados have been a major influence in her life.

Euphrosine is proud that today she can support so many small-scale avocado farmers through Avocare’s innovative, zero-waste business model.
