A woman-led business empowering women farmers in Rwanda
Avocare is a proud woman-led business that aims to empower workers and women farmers in Rwanda.
Avocare Ltd was founded in 2018 by Niyidukunda Mugeni Euphrosine, a dynamic 22-year-old woman. Her parents were both farmers and she grew up on their smallholder avocado farm in Mbazi, Huye district, in southern Rwanda.
Avocados there grew in such abundance that they were often left to rot on the ground or fed to the pigs. Farmers were paid a pittance for their fruit, not enough for a living wage. Even as a child, Euphrosine was frustrated that her family’s avocados were not more widely used or appreciated. She was sure that there was more to this humble fruit. That’s when her father told her that avocado oil could be used as cooking oil.
Fast forward 15 years and Euphrosine was a 2nd year student at the College of Business and Economics, at the University of Rwanda. She created her first avocado oil prototype – “Green Diamo” and won a district level competition for youth innovators. She used the cash prize to start producing Green Diamo properly.
At the end of 2018, Euphrosine won Rwf3 million at the Youth Connekt Awards Competition. She then invested a processing machine, convinced that there was a market for high-quality avocado oil in Rwanda.
There was, and it was a much better solution to post-harvest loss than feeding the pigs.
Euphrosine has also helped to re-energize avocado farming and women farmers in Rwanda by paying real living wages.
